About
SafeWalk began as a project of the University Undergraduate Student Government, in response to campus and community safety concerns. Our program aims to provide University affiliates with safe travel alternatives during nighttime hours.
SafeWalk History Timeline
Fall 2009 – Spring 2015
The initial planning for SafeWalk occurred through the Fall of 2009 with our first operational semester being the Spring of 2010. From this point to the Spring of 2015 SafeWalk operated under the Executive Branch of the Undergraduate Student Government.
Fall 2015 – Fall 2021
After the Spring of 2015, to better support the program’s growth SafeWalk transitioned from the Undergraduate Student Government to operate under the University Department of Student Affairs. During this time, the program began digitally tracking program data and implemented our current online reservation system!
Spring 2022 – Present
SafeWalk currently operates under UNC Police, though we continue to regularly collaborate with Student Affairs, Carolina Housing, and the Undergraduate Student Government. Our program continues to grow as we evaluate the needs of the campus community and serve all University affiliates both ON and OFF campus!
Nick Chappell, Program Director
Nick is a second-year graduate student at the Gillings School of Global Public Health and has served as Program Manager since the Fall of 2019. He is currently working towards completing his Master of Public Health with a concentration in Environmental Health Solutions.
Nick joined SafeWalk after hearing about the program at Fall Fest in 2018; his favorite part about working at SafeWalk is getting to meet all of the people that walk with him!
Nick is responsible for overseeing the Board of Directors and providing direction in planning for the program’s future.
Thomas Elley, Director of Operations
Thomas is in his second year of undergraduate studies, double majoring in Mathematics and Peace, War, & Defense, with a concentration in International Security and Intelligence.
Thomas joined Safewalk in 2022 as a way to be productive during sleepless nights. He’s an avid hiker, hoping to one day walk all 1,175 miles of the NC Mountains-to-Sea Trail.
In his role as Director of Operations, Thomas is responsible for compiling program usage data and assessing program performance.
Lindsey Vaughan, Director of Marketing
Lindsey is currently a sophomore from Wilson, NC, double majoring in Vocal Performance and Asian Studies with a concentration in Korean Language. She joined SafeWalk in the Spring semester of her first year.
Lindsey enjoys reading, particularly fiction novels, watching baseball, and singing, occasionally.
As Director of Marketing, Lindsey acts as the liaison between the Board of Directors and the student body, directly managing SafeWalk’s social media accounts and brand more generally.
